As the holiday season creeps closer, many in Muscatine have begun thinking about seasonal shopping. As residents begin the search for perfect gifts, Melanie Alexander, Director of the Muscatine Art Center (MAC), encourages you to come visit the MAC Holiday Pop-Up Shop between November 15th and January 5th.

Now in its second year, the MAC Holiday Pop-Up Shop features a wide variety of unique art from across Muscatine and eastern Iowa. “It’s a temporary store where we’ve invited local and regional artists to display their goods and sell them,” elaborated Alexander. From printed cards, to illustrated children’s books, to quilts, to photographs, the MAC Holiday Pop-Up Shop will feature one of a kind gifts to suit any taste.

As an added benefit, a portion of all proceeds from the MAC Holiday Pop-Up Shop will go to support the Friends of the MAC. Each year, this organization puts on a variety of educational programs for people of all ages, fostering a love of art in the community.

Along with the beautiful works in their Holiday Pop-Up Shop, the MAC will have many ornaments available for purchase as well from their annual Heartfelt and Homemade Ornament Competition. On November 15th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the MAC, the community can view ornaments in the competition, as well as the MAC Pop Up Shop, for the first time. Judges will award first, second, and third place in the competition and present the first-place winner with a $100 prize. Everyone at the event may purchase ornaments from the contest as well, which they can pick up and take home beginning December 16th. Tickets for the event cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Children eighteen and under may attend for $10 each. Those competing in the Heartfelt and Homemade Competition may attend for free.

A holiday favorite for the past several years, Alexander looks forward to welcoming many people and competitors to this year’s Heartfelt and Homemade Ornament Competition and hopes attendees will enjoy this start to the holiday season. “I think it’s a fun sense of community,” shared Alexander. “It’s fun to see [the ornament artists] all get to visit with each other.

After November 15th, the MAC Holiday Pop-Up Shop will operate during normal MAC hours. Visit https://www.muscatineartcenter.org/ to view them.
