MUSCATINE, Iowa–This past winter, support has poured into the Muscatine Humane Society through both the Betty White Challenge and their 17th annual Valentine’s Apple fundraiser. Through these fundraisers and the continued generosity of the community, the Humane Society has gotten closer to completing their dog kennel replacement project and has had the resources to start caring for the 42 rescued dogs that the Muscatine Police Department brought them Feb. 10.

In honor of Betty White, famous both for her acting and her love of animals, the Muscatine Humane Society held the Betty White Challenge, which invited people to make a $5 donation to try to raise a total of $5,000 so they could add her name to their donor plaque. People flocked to the fundraiser, bringing in a total of $10,963 for the shelter.

In February, the Humane Society continued its long running Valentine’s Apple Fundraiser, creating delicious candy apples to sell around town. Though crafting each apple takes time and work, people throughout the community devour them, with their sale continuing to bring in more than $20,000 annually. “I feel like it is something the city residents look forward to,” observed Muscatine Humane Society Director Chris McGinnis.

These funds could not have come at a better time, as the Humane Society now has 42 rescued dogs in their custody, which they estimate will cost about $20,000 to care for. Due to the poor conditions the dogs lived in, all of them will require medical care, such as undergoing spay and neuter operations and having dental work to clean out oral disease and remove infected teeth. Fortunately, the Humane Society has already begun getting the dogs the treatment they will need, and McGinnis predicts that some will meet the criteria for going up for adoption within the next month or so. She encourages anyone interested in adopting one of these dogs or any of the Humane Society’s other pets to continue watching PetFinder for more information about them.

Though this winter’s fundraisers have helped the Humane Society immensely, providing medical care for so many dogs will prove costly. Anyone wanting to help the Humane Society may make a monetary donation to them by bringing or mailing a check to 920 South Houser Street, Muscatine.
