MUSCATINE, Iowa–For a smaller city, a remarkable number of important public figures have called Muscatine home. Dr. Jim Kim, former president of the World Bank, represents one of them. Oct. 8 Kim will return to Muscatine to speak at the Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine’s annual meeting.
Born in South Korea, Kim and his family moved to Muscatine when he was a young child. Kim went on to attend Muscatine High School where he participated in Model UN, served as senior class president, and played football, basketball, and golf. The valedictorian for his high school class, Kim went on to earn a bachelors degree in human biology from Brown University as well as a PhD. in anthropology and his M. D. from Harvard.
Over the years, Kim has held many prestigious positions where he has helped improve the quality of life and provide better healthcare or helped educate others to continue that work. They include co-founder and executive director of Partners in Health from 1987 to 2003 (which seeks to improve healthcare in developing countries), a professor at Harvard from 1993 to 2003, the director of the World Health Organization from 2003 to 2006, the president of Dartmouth College from 2009 to 2012, and the president of the World Bank from 2012 to 2019. Kim currently serves as the vice chairman of Infrastructure Partners. For his work improving healthcare and reducing poverty, Kim has received The MacArthur Fellowship Genius Award and the Carnegie Greatest Immigrants Award, as well as recognition from Forbes, Time, and U.S. News and World Report. The recent documentary “Bending the Arc” by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon tells the story of how he helped found Partners in Health and how it changed the lives of many people for the better.
For the past three years, the Community Foundation has worked to bring Kim back to Muscatine to share his story and inspiration with current residents. “Dr. Kim is a sought-after speaker and contributor, presenting to the world’s most powerful leaders, as well as prestigious global health, economic, and student forums,” stated Community Foundation Executive Director Charla Schafer: “Dr. Jim Kim’s work has saved countless lives, improved economies, modified philosophies, and impacted global policies. We are humbled and privileged that he will be returning to Muscatine to present at the Community Foundation’s annual meeting, sharing his work, vision, and a few memories from his youth.”
The Community Foundation’s annual meeting will take place Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. in the Calvary Church Auditorium, located at 501 West Bypass 61, Suite 16, Muscatine.
