MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Muscatine City Council will conduct a public hearing on vacation of alley right-of-way and swear in four new firefighters when the Council meets in virtual session Thursday (Jan. 7, 2021).

The regular meeting of the Muscatine City Council will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday. Information on joining the virtual session and how to make a comment during the meeting is listed below.

The session will also be broadcast live on the City of Muscatine YouTube channel and will also be shown live on Muscatine Power & Water Cable Channel 2.

Millwork Properties, LLC, has submitted a request for the City of Muscatine to vacate and then deed over the unimproved right-of-way that directly adjoins the read of their property at 1103 Musser Street. Iowa law requires a public hearing before the City Council can act on the request and approve the ordinance that will be brought forward later in the meeting.

Before the public hearing, Chance Sutherland, David Grafton, Brandon Rodriguez, and Sean Paustian will be sworn in as members of the Muscatine Fire Department by Muscatine Mayor Diana Broderson.

The Council will also be asked to set the dates for four public hearings. Three of the public hearings, tentatively scheduled for January 21, 2021, concern pavement management projects that were delayed due to uncertainty of road use tax revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Details of each project will be available for the public hearing.

However, road use tax revenue appears better than anticipated and the Road Maintenance Division of Public Works has recommended several sections to be included in the bid process later this winter. All sections may not be completed under the 2020-2021 Road Management Program depending on how the bidding process proceeds.

The first public hearing will cover resuming the 2020-2021 Full-Depth Patching Program, the second on resuming the 2020-2021 Hot Mix Asphalt Overlay Project, and the third public on resuming the 2020-2021 Hot Mix Asphalt Alley Overlay Project. Proposed sections can be found in the Agenda Item Summary attached to this week’s meeting Agenda.

The fourth public hearing is tentatively scheduled for February 4, 2021, and concerns the Urbana Renewal Plan Amendments.
