MUSCATINE, Iowa–Two new public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations have been installed in Muscatine. The new EV chargers, one at Musser Public Library (408 East Second Street) and the other at The Merrill Hotel (119 West Mississippi Drive) are now available for use. Each is capable of charging two vehicles simultaneously.

Muscatine Power and Water (MPW) partnered with Musser Public Library, making two parking stalls available for the EV charging station, accessible to library patrons and the public at all times. Both MPW and Musser Library value partnerships with other local organizations to improve their impact in the community and this project is just one example.

“Musser Library’s engagement with community partners allows us to be a part of the future of Muscatine,” said Library Director Pam Collins. “We are excited to have an EV charging station in our lot and encourage the community to use it when visiting the library.”

As part of its commitment to revitalizing downtown Muscatine and inviting business leaders, conference planners, and leisure travelers to the area, The Merrill Hotel provided convenient parking spaces for an EV charging station available to visitors staying at the hotel, as well as Muscatine residents and downtown shoppers.

“Allowing MPW to install an EV charging station at The Merrill Hotel not only pushes Muscatine towards a greener future, but it encourages our visitors from out of town to drive their electric vehicles to our hotel for different events,” said R. Lee Belfield, General Manager at The Merrill Hotel.

As an interest in EVs has grown in the Muscatine area, MPW formed an EV Stakeholder Group comprised of local industry and business representatives. The group helps guide MPW’s support of EV ownership and plans for additional publicly accessible charging stations.

General Manager of MPW, Gage Huston, is excited about the two new EV charging stations. “We’ve seen the demand for EV charging stations continue to grow throughout the community,” he says. “We are thrilled about the two new installations this year and look forward to another in the year ahead.”
