MUSCATINE, Iowa–In recent weeks, the joint food program run by Muscatine Center for Social Action, the Salvation Army of Muscatine County, and United Way of Muscatine has assisted many experiencing food insecurity. To allow these organizations to continue to provide to those in need through both their walk up pantries and food delivery program, Muscatine Fareway made a generous grocery donation April 27.

The Joint food delivery program requires a lot of food to keep it up and running. MCSA Food Programs Manager Nora Dwyer shared it takes about 300 bags of food, weighing roughly 7,500 pounds, to feed all the households that qualify for deliveries. Lieutenant Greg Bock of the Salvation added that those who receive food from their walk of pantry and MCSA’s, along with 300-350 people each week who receive hot meal deliveries, raise the amount of food needed even more.

Muscatine Fareway gave all of these efforts a boost by bringing bags of food to both MCSA and the Salvation Army. Jennifer Leirness, Resource Development Officer for MCSA reported that their pantry received 15 bags of food weighing nearly 200 pounds, enough to feed 15 families the week of May 4. Bock also noted that Muscatine Fareway has made a point of bringing smaller donations to the pantries often to keep them stocked. “They just keep bringing more and more down every few days, and they’re great bags,” he said.

As the need for food remains high across the county, the Salvation Army and MCSA feel grateful for Fareway’s donations and their continued support. “The fact that Fareway has the desire to help their community is inspiring and should let everyone know that they are a business who values the people in the community in which they abide,” stated Bock.

“Knowing that businesses in town like Fareway care so much about the people we serve is a great feeling, and collaborating to feed those in need is a great partnership,” added Leirness.

As the joint food program continues to help the most vulnerable in Muscatine County, it still needs volunteers and donations. If you would like to donate food, you may bring food directly to either location or contact MCSA Program Assistant Marie Franke at mfranke@mcsaiowa.org. The Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine will accept monetary donations on their behalf.
