On Tuesday, August 13th, from 4:00-8:00 pm, the Fruitland Community Lions Club provided free vision screenings for children aged six months to five years at the Fruitland Community Center. Open to both resident and non-resident children, the Fruitland Community Lions Club offered this free service as part of the Iowa KidSight Program.

Maggie Curry, a member of the Fruitland Community Lions Club, explained the Iowa KidsSight program and its purpose:

Iowa KidSight is a joint project of the Lions Clubs of Iowa and the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, dedicated to enhancing the early detection and treatment of vision impairments in young children. . .. The goals of the project are [to] objectively screen vision in infants and young children throughout all of Iowa’s ninety-nine counties for free, educate the public about the risk of undetected vision loss, [and] identify ways to sustain vision screening programs of this type.

The night of the screenings, ten volunteers donated their time to help with the screenings. The Fruitland Community Lions Club would like to thank everyone who helped out with this important community service.
