MUSCATINE, Iowa–The Hard Won. Not Done. committee of the League of Women Voters of Muscatine County recognizes Women’s Equality Day on Aug. 26 in celebration of the advancements made towards achieving full political, economic, and social equality. The 19th Amendment, certified in Washington, D.C., Aug. 26, 1920, granted voting rights to American women.

“Today we reflect on how far we have come and look towards the future to see what steps we can take to ensure all women can fulfill their highest potential,” said Sue Johannsen, President of the League of Women Voters of Muscatine County and member of the Hard Won. Not Done. committee.

Women’s Equality Day celebrates the trailblazers, visionaries, and suffragists who have worked towards equal rights for all. With one more state needed, Tennessee ratified the 19th Amendment Aug.18, 1920.

“The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920, by Iowan Carrie Chapman Catt, just months before the 19th Amendment was adopted,” stated Johannsen. “As we approach the centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment of the League in 2020, I am encouraged by the women leaders who continue to advocate for equality for all. The right to vote was hard won, but we are not done.”

“This centennial year is particularly important to recognize the achievements like more women candidates running for office in 2020. Today we acknowledge women and men who paved the way.”

Due to COVID-19, the League of Women Voters postponed planned events to celebrate.
