MUSCATINE, Iowa–“I’ve always wanted to open a bar and restaurant in Muscatine,” shared Jerry Healey, owner of Riverside Diner in downtown Muscatine and now co-owner of Headquarters, a new bar and restaurant opening at 2108 Grandview Avenue. For years, Healey knew the owners of Missterssippis, a popular bar and grill. Though they had talked about selling their business before, Healey never quite believed them. Then, they closed for good in February and Healey knew the time had come for him to open a place of his own. ” I knew the previous owners were talking about getting out of it, but I didn’t know they were serious until they put it up for sale–I jumped at the opportunity,” he said.

Along with his cousin, Ben Meier, Healey purchased the building and has begun the process of fully renovating it. “It’s getting a major face lift,” he emphasized: “The whole outside is going to be new, and the whole inside is new. It’s going to be a really, really fun place.”

Once open, Healey will oversee the bar while Rick Todd of Rick’s Ribs and Catering will provide all of the food. “He’s always wanted his own place,” added Healey. “Rick is well know for his food.”

Along with providing fantastic food and drinks, Healey also hopes to turn Headquarters into a gathering place, holding a wide variety of events there for people of all ages. “We wanted to build a place where we could hold car shows, cruise nights, bike nights, Jeep nights, darts leagues, and volleyball leagues,” he outlined. Several times each summer, Healey would also like to hold kids’ nights, with bounce houses and lawn games available for families to enjoy.

As construction continues on the building, both inside and out, and COVID-19 restricts the number of people who can gather together, Healey refrained from giving a firm opening date for Headquarters. However, he plans to open to the public in the next several months and cannot wait for the day that Headquarters can become a social hot spot. “Everyone we’ve talked to is really excited about it,” Healey stated.

Healey especially looks forward to, “just having a large quantity of people around having a good time,” as well as providing a good environment for the staff too. “We want the staff to have just as good of a time as people coming to visit.”
