Houser Hill and West Hill Work Continues, but Much Still Remains

The closure of North Houser Street (Lucas to Hershey) has wrapped up its third week, and City of Muscatine project managers remain optimistic that the area known as Houser Hill will reopen before the start of school.

Work on the West Hill Sanitary and Storm Sewer Separation Project proceeds on two fronts as KMA Excavating continues underground work from Chestnut towards Linn, and KE Flatwork paves between Cedar and Chestnut.

Tiling work continued on the eastbound lane of Houser Street.

Crews saw cutting the areas marked for repair on North Houser Street completed their work, and primary contractor, Heuer Construction, poured the concrete patches in the south bound lane Monday, August 5th, 2019. Tiling on the east side of the street has finished, and pouring the concrete patches in the north bound lane has gotten underway.
As part of the West Side Trail Project, contractors will tile on the west side of the street. That project will connect the Kent Stein Park trailhead with the trail in Discovery Park. Both sides of the street required tiling to prevent water from the various springs along the right-of-way from flowing onto the pavement, damaging it once again. The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) will award the Westside Trail Project at their August 20th, 2019, bid opening. The City of Muscatine has tentatively scheduled work to start on September 30th, 2019.

City project managers are anticipating that 8th Street from Cedar to Chestnut will reopen to traffic this week. KE Flatwork worked on the Sycamore Street connectors with 8th Street Friday, August 2nd, leaving the connector with Cedar along with sidewalks and driveways in the 200 block of East 8th to finish.

Repaving of Sycamore Street from 7th to 8th, including sidewalks, driveways, and backfilling behind the curb has ended as well.
Workers removed barricades at the Chestnut and 7th Street intersection and pulled them back to the entrances to the 7th Street alleys. KE Flatwork prepared Iowa Avenue from 7th to 8th for repaving. Work on sidewalks and driveways in the 100 block of East 8th will also come to completion this week, weather permitting, with the contractor tentatively scheduled to have 8th Street from Cedar through the Iowa intersection opened by September 2nd.

Uphill on West 8th Street, KMA excavating began installation of the sanitary sewer line from Chestnut west toward Linn Street. Storm sewer and water line work also needs accomplishing up to Pine Street before that intersection closes to traffic. The Pine Street intersection closed last week.
