MUSCATINE, Iowa–For the past 94 years, Marian Hillier has called Muscatine home. Though born in Scott County, Hillier spent her entire childhood in Muscatine. Growing up, Hillier attended Garfield Elementary School and Central for secondary school before entering the world of work.

Over her long and fruitful career, Hillier held a variety of jobs throughout Muscatine. These included doing bookkeeping for the Jupiter Discount Store for 24-and-a-half years, placing inserts in newspapers for 24 years, working in the card section of the Hallmark Store in the Muscatine Mall for five years, and doing bookkeeping for Columbia Rug’s Muscatine location for 10 years. Hillier enjoyed every job she worked at as well as all the people she met in the process.

Along with work, Hillier had active family and social lives. In 1948, not long after she graduated from high school, she married her husband, Jack Hillier, at Musserville Methodist Church. The couple enjoyed 70 happy years of marriage and raised two children together, Patricia and James. She now has two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

An active volunteer, Hillier belonged to the Moose Club for 20 years and helped organize their bingo nights and other events. Hillier and her husband also spent about four years volunteering at Lutheran Homes as well.

Always a social person, Hillier loved all the time she spent working with people through her careers and volunteering. Her favorite memories of Muscatine include the Saturday evenings she and her husband spent having dinner at the Moose Lodge with friends and then staying for the dancing later in the night and the dinner and card parities held at friends’ houses after the lodge closed. Now as a resident at Bickford, Hillier continues to enjoy spending time with others and getting involved with all the activities available for residents.
