LETTS, Iowa—On Feb. 24, the Louisa-Muscatine girls bowling team scored their fourth consecutive 1A state tournament win. With the boys team coming in second place, this year proved one of the best for the L&M bowling program. To top off a season of success, Al Jordan, who has coached boys and girls bowling for the past 20 years, received the prestigious Golden Plaque of Distinction.

Over the course of the season, all L&Ms bowlers have worked hard to develop their skills. In addition to attending two team practices a week, all bowlers participated in leagues that met at least once a week and often went bowling on their own. “They’re driven to be the best and they work very hard on it, very hard,” emphasized Jordan.

Once each team reached the state tournament, their hard work truly showed. The girls team, which included three seniors, Shaydn Bishop, Lauren Bodman, and Whittney Mores, handily beat their opponents to earn their fourth championship.

For the boys, seniors Dustin Beaham (who bowled a perfect 300 to become the best 1A boys bowler in 2019), Hunter Rickey, and Drew Scheidler along with two sophomores and a freshman, also put up a good showing. Freshman Keaten Bieri had a particularly good outing, bowling what Jordan described as a, “pretty phenomenal,” 299-point game.

Reflecting back on the tournament, Jordan felt satisfied with how both teams performed. “They gave it their all and you can’t ask for any more than that,” he stated. “They kept their emotions in check and worked their hardest.”
In addition to both teams’ honors, Jordan received an honor of his own, the Golden Plaque of Distinction. Given to only a handful of coaches, Jordan felt honored to receive it, but stressed that many other people have helped L&M’s bowling program succeed over the years: “I’m very humbled to receive it,” he said, adding, “it wasn’t just me—there were a lot of people behind it.”

After L&M bowling rolled its way into the record books for another season, Jordan looks forward to their continuing success next year. Though both the boys and girls teams have graduating seniors, Jordan knows that current underclassmen and upcoming eighth graders will have what it takes to maintain L&M’s bowling dominance.
