MUSCATINE, Iowa–For some time, Nick Rolland had wanted to run his own business. While searching for opportunities, he learned about selling mattresses by appointment, and he considered it a good fit. He remembers, “everything I read made sense, so I moved forward with it.”
Just shy of a year ago, at the end of March in 2021, Rolland opened Mattress by Appointment in Muscatine. A very small business with Rolland as its sole employee, Mattress by Appointment focuses exclusively on selling high quality new in the plastic mattresses and box springs at 50 to 80% less than a typical furniture store would. “Everything in my business model I do to keep prices low,” Rolland emphasized.
Mattress by Appointment stocks private label mattresses, which adhere to the same quality standards as mattresses sold in conventional stores but that do not have a brand name. With mattresses ranging in size from twins to kings, all levels of firmness, and in styles ranging from the most basic to luxury options, Mattress by Appointment has the right mattress for just about any customer. “There’s almost always something for everyone,” said Rolland. “It’s very unusual for someone not to find a mattress they like at a price that they like.”
To help keep overhead low, shoppers must make an appointment to visit Rolland at the Mattress by Appointment showroom, which they can do either by calling 563-210-4691 or by sending a Facebook message to the Mattress by Appointment Muscatine Facebook Page. Once they have a time set up, people can try out the kinds of mattresses they think will best suit them. Because the showroom doubles as Rolland’s mattress storage area, shoppers have a large selection to try out whenever they go in.
Once customers find a mattress they would like to purchase, they have several options for doing so. In addition to accepting payment in full, Rolland also allows people to set up a payment plan for only $10 down. They may then either choose to pay off the balance of their mattress in 90 days or over the course of one year with an extra service fee. Because Rolland keeps the mattresses he sells in store, he can usually deliver them to purchasers’ homes the same day they buy them.
When Rolland first opened Mattress by Appointment, he had no idea how many people could benefit from a new mattress but found the price of a conventional mattress too expensive. He has loved providing people with a more affordable option that puts better sleep within everyone’s reach. “I really get to help people who really need help,” he glowed.
As a small business owner, Rolland appreciates all the ways the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry helps him and other businesses connect with customers and each other. He shared he chose to join because, “I wanted the opportunity to meet other business owners, to promote my business, and learn about the businesses and possibly patronize them if the need arises.”
