Muscatine Living

MUSCATINE, Iowa–12 years ago, shortly after the birth of her daughter and in between jobs, Kira Reed found herself in need of a creative outlet. She taught herself how to decorate cakes by watching YouTube videos and discovered a passion for it. “I found I really enjoyed decorating cakes and people wanted to buy them,” she observed. Over time, Reed’s work turned into her own home business, the West Hill Cakery. As more and more people wanted Reeds’ creations, she found herself looking to expand her business by moving it out of her historic West Hill home and into a space of its own. This spring, the West Hill Cakery will officially open in its new location at 810 Park Avenue Suite 13, the former La Morelia restaurant at the Lincoln Center.

Not your typical sweet shop, West Hill Cakery offers a wide assortment of custom desserts. “West Hill Cakery is a more modern take on upscale, custom desserts,” Reed explained. “Anything you can put sugar in, we’ll attempt!”

As their name implies, West Hill Cakery provides a wide assortment of bespoke cake options. Though the business now resides on the east side of town, Reed has stayed true to her business’ roots and named each cake flavor she bakes after one of Muscatine’s historic West Hill houses.

Along with taking custom orders for items such as wedding cakes, cupcakes for special events, and novelty cookies, West Hill Cakery plans to offer a rotating menu of goodies available in store. Whether you would like to enjoy a treat in their dinning area or bring something home for your family, West Hill Cakery will have something available.

For people planning parties, Reed invites you to contact the West Hill Cakery to rent out their spacious dinning room. “We’re looking forward to some beautiful bridal showers, and baby showers, and even decorate your own cookie parties,” Reed beamed.

Though Reed had wanted to bring the West Hill Cakery to a brick and mortar location for years, she did not feel quite ready to until she began working with the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She elaborated, “They have been such a fabulous resource for finally opening in Muscatine, because it had been a dream for years.” Through the help of caring people and timely programs, Reed has brought her dream to life and feels proud to belong to the chamber as one of their newest members.

As Reed starts cooking up a whole new batch of mouthwatering treats at the West Hill Cakery, she encourages you to stop out and see them for yourselves once they open between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturdays. “Everybody loves cake!” she enthused. “We are just a really fun, quirky location for people to have fun.”

Open by appointment for custom orders now, Reed also welcomes anyone looking for dessert for their next special event to send her their ideas using the order form on the West Hill Cakery’s website.
