NAMI Basics education program will be offered in six Thursday evening sessions beginning
October 15 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Strawberry Farm Bed & Breakfast, 3402 Tipton Road,
Muscatine. The course is free and available to parents, foster parents, and other caregivers of
children and adolescents who have shown symptoms of a mental health condition. Foster parent
continuing education credits are available with successful completion of all six sessions.
Registration is required. Learn more at www.namigmv.org, https://bit.ly/32Refid or call 563-386-
7477 Ext. 266 (M-F 10-2).
This course is taught by trained parents or caregivers who have similar lived experiences
with their own children and allows families to connect, learn, and empower themselves to
overcome new challenges. Course topics include the impact mental health conditions can
have on the whole family, resources to help navigate school and justice systems, and how to
prepare and respond to crisis situations.
“Seventeen percent of youth aged six to 17 years do experience a mental health disorder in any
given year,” says Laurie Edge, Education Coordinator, NAMI Greater Mississippi Valley. “Like other
medical conditions, the sooner treatment is received – the more effective it is. That is why we are
working with the Muscatine Department of Public Healthy and Trinity Muscatine to close the
information gap for families, find help and prevent youth suicide.”
Support from the Muscatine Health Support Granting Fund makes this program possible.
