MUSCATINE, Iowa–Though the grass has not greened up yet on the diamonds of Kent-Stein Park and a chill remains in the air, spring will come soon to Muscatine. With the return of warmer weather will come a return to outdoor sports. In anticipation of a spring and summer filled with softball fun, the Muscatine Girls Softball Association has opened signups for this year’s season.

A city league open to softball players of all experience levels, the Muscatine Girls Softball Association has teams open for ages six through 18. After signing up, players will have tryouts the first weekend in March. These tryouts will test players catching and hand eye coordination, batting skills, and if time permits, their running speed to first base. These tests will help place players on the right teams, as everyone who tries out will get to play.

Following tryouts, practices will begin in April. They will take place twice a week, for an hour and a half each. If players would like extra practice and schedules permit, coaches may add additional optional practices as well. In May and June, teams will play two games a week against other teams in their same division. Weather permitting, final tournaments will take place the week before the Fourth of July, keeping them from interfering with holiday celebrations or travel plans.

An enjoyable and accessible way for young softball players to improve their skills and have a good time, Board of Directors President Brittany Smith considers it the perfect way to try softball. “One of the big ways we differ are one our costs are very, very minimal for the player’s families and we provide all the equipment except a ball glove.”

Signups for this year’s season began the first weekend in February and will continue on Feb. 18 and 19 and 25 and 26 at the Rose Bowl at 1411 Grandview Avenue in Muscatine. Saturday signups will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. and Sunday signups from 1 to 5 p.m. Registration costs $65 per child, but the Association has scholarships available for any families experiencing financial need. Anyone with questions about registration may call Smith at 563-554-0504.

With the softball season coming up, Smith anticipates a good year for the Muscatine Girls Softball Association. “One thing we are all very excited about, we have an entirely new board of directors and we’re excited to see this organization grow with 100% accountability and 100% transparency.”

She also knows the season will hold many good memories for all who play for the Muscatine Girls Softball Association: “I’ve seen a lot of girls get very excited to play with their friends and sometimes against their friends. They enjoy the sportsmanship and the teamwork.”
