MUSCATINE, Iowa–Though people often admire a well trained dog, they do not always feel confident about training their own pets, especially first time dog owners. To help people learn how to work with their dogs and teach them the simple commands that will benefit them the most, the Muscatine Humane Society offers two different obedience classes that will offer their next series of classes at the end February.

Because both puppies and older dogs can both benefit from obedience classes, the Muscatine Humane Society offers two different classes, Puppy Obedience for dogs 12- to 18-weeks-old and Basic Obedience for dogs 19-weeks-old and up. Whichever class dog owners enroll in, they will learn the same foundational skills, come, down, leave it, sit, and stay, and others as well. Dogs and their owners will also practice good leash walking etiquette. All classes will take place at the Canine Activity Center of Muscatine, located next to the Muscatine Humane Society, at 920 South Houser Street on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Though these skills may all sound simple, they give dog owners the tools to help their dogs behave well in a wide variety of situations. This in turn will help dogs act as better members of their families and the community, reducing stress for both owners and their dogs and making all of them happier and more content. Because the classes will help dog owners learn how to continue practicing these skills at home, they can keep strengthening them, providing positive results long after they complete the classes.

To ensure that dog owners have many opportunities to enroll in obedience classes, the Humane Society offers them once every seven to eight weeks, with the next starting at the end of February. Anyone who would like to take one of these classes with their dogs may register by calling the Muscatine Humane Society at 563-263-7358, adding their name and phone number to the class waiting list, and paying their $100 class fee. The Muscatine Humane Society will call everyone who has made it into the class to confirm their participation. If a session fills up, people already on the list will get the first spots in the next available class.

With many people ready to train their new puppies or to help their older dogs start the year off on the right paw, the Muscatine Humane Society invites anyone interested in doing obedience classes with their dogs to get signed up for the next session today. “Classes build the owner-dog relationship,” said Debbie Back of the Muscatine Humane Society. “A happy dog makes a happy owner and family.”
