MUSCATINE, Iowa–More than 75 area residents and their friends and families participated in this year’s Muscatine Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, participants walked as individuals and small groups on sidewalks, tracks, and trails across Muscatine Aug. 15, raising more than $16,800 to fund the care, support, and research programs of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Team Sunnybrook Makin’ Memories currently holds the title as the top fundraising team at this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising more than $2,600. The Sunnybrook at Muscatine Walk Team supports residents and families as they explore or struggle with the unknowns that memory loss can bring. They also support Alzheimer’s and dementia research and education as we all continue to search for a cure.

Team Bickford of Muscatine and Impact Athletic Performance place as the second and third top teams raising $2,275 and $1,350 respectively so far. The top individual walkers include Lindsey Stieger raising $830, Megan Jones raising $800, and Jordan Lloyd raising $730 so far. Fundraising continues through the end of the year, and anyone can donate to a team or walker by visiting act.alz.org/MuscatineWalk.

Though this year’s Walk looked different, it still included time-honored components in the Walk day activities. Aug. 15, an Opening Ceremony took place featuring local speakers and a presentation of Promise Flowers to honor the personal reasons participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementia, all delivered to participants’ smartphones, tablets, and computers. Organizers also planted a view only Promise Garden on Walk day outside the Red Brick Building (Pearl City Station) to honor all those impacted by Alzheimer’s.

More than 5 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease – the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 16 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In Iowa alone, more than 66,000 people live with the disease and 136,000 serve as caregivers.
