Bertha was born September 11, 1926 in Alma, Illinois, the daughter of Elmer and Grace Turner. She was united in marriage to Leonard L. Sloat on March 17, 1946 in Centralia, Illinois. The couple was married for 68 wonderful years. Bertha worked for H.J. Heinz for over twenty years.
Bertha was endlessly committed and dedicated to her children and grandchildren. Another one of her greatest joys were her great-grandchildren. Bertha was an accomplished quilter. She took great pride in making several hand stitched quilts. However, she was best known for her cooking and family dinners, especially her homemade beef and noodles.
Bertha is survived by her children: Leonard C. (Tudi) Sloat of Coppell, TX; Lloyd D. (Connie) Sloat of Orlando, FL; Carol J. (Edward) Davis of Muscatine; David L. Sloat of Muscatine; Janet L (Dr. Joe) DeSpirito of Bloomington, IN; and Luana J. Gredell of Muscatine; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Lloyd Turner; sisters: Ethel Wilsdon, Linda Ehrat, and Nellie Mashburn; and son-in-law, John Gredell.
A special thank you to the dedicated staff at Lutheran Living and Hospice Compasses for caring for Bertha at the end of her life.
