Paint the Pearl: The Muscatine Mural, 2nd and Iowa

    Chris P. Anderson
"Chris Anderson is an artist born and raised in Iowa who lives in Muscatine. An employee of Pearl City Media, his latest work involves filming and production. He has worked with the Community Foundation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club of Muscatine, and the Muscatine Community School District. He has done everything from murals, illustrating children's books, to video production and live broadcasting.

The mural is on the corner of Second Street and Iowa Avenue and was completed in the summer of 2016. It replaced an existing mural that had fallen into disrepair.

    The original Muscatine Mural.

Chris P. Anderson’s reimagined Muscatine Mural.

It features Muscatine and the riverfront in downtown. It includes the Harvest statue, the Beckey Bridge, the Pearl riverboat, the Hotel Muscatine, and the Merrill Hotel.

Some interesting information is that at the time of painting, the Merrill Hotel had not been built yet, so I used blueprints and drafts of what the building would look like in the future.

If you look closely, you will also see my friend and supporter, Tom Meeker, on the Pearl boat. There’s a “clam tree” sprouting on the riverbank, and a Canadian Pacific (C. P.) train quietly passing through town.

I want to thank Tom Meeker and all his staff with Muscatine Downtown Investors for the privilege of painting this mural. Keep looking up!
