Hello Muskie Families!

I’d like to welcome all of you to the 2020-21 school year! I know many of you are a bit nervous, anxious, and excited to get this year started especially knowing that the school day is going to look and feel different this year. I can assure you that you are not alone in these feelings as I, too, share them as a Muskie parent and as an employee.

I want to reassure you that the district is doing everything it can to provide a safe learning environment for its students and staff who have chosen in-person learning. We are requiring masks for all students and staff when social distancing is not able to be maintained. When possible, teachers have worked to reconfigure classrooms to allow for more space between students. We have special cleaning supplies available for all classrooms to disinfect desks and high-traffic areas between transitions and have provided sanitizing stations where applicable especially at Susan Clark Junior High and Muscatine High School. Our custodial staff are working extra hard to thoroughly clean and sanitize rooms and high traffic areas when students leave for the day. It is going to take all of us to come together and do our part so that we can maintain in-person learning for as long as possible for classrooms, school buildings, and the district as a whole.

We ask that you keep your child home when they are not feeling well especially when they have a fever. (Please do not send them with a fever-reducing medication in their system.) Schools are not doing temperature screenings before entering buildings, but we ask that you perform self-screenings each day. The Centers for Disease Control offers this to parents:

  • Check in with your child each morning for signs of illness. If your child has a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher, they should not go to school.
  • Make sure your child does not have a sore throat or other signs of illness, like a cough, diarrhea, severe headache, vomiting, or body aches.
  • If your child has had close contact to a COVID-19 case, they should not go to school. Follow guidance on what to do when someone has known exposure.

When a student develops symptoms while at school, we will follow the protocol outlined in the Return to Learn FAQ Guide (page 7):

“It is important that all individuals who feel ill at school communicate with the school health office. A student or staff member who is not feeling well and/or is presenting symptoms of COVID-19 will be isolated in a special area of the nurse’s office and assessed. If the student has a fever or does not meet the health screening based on assessment from the school nurse, the parent will be contacted to pick up the student as soon as possible.  Families are encouraged to follow up with their healthcare provider. Custodial staff will be informed to clean workspaces used by the symptomatic person. Siblings/same household members of the symptomatic student will also be assessed.”

The school district continues to work closely with Muscatine County Public Health (MCPH). The district will utilize School Messenger and follow recommendations by MCPH when notifying parents of a COVID positive case within our campuses. The district will also follow guidance from the Iowa Department of Education and Iowa Department of Public Health to determine when it is necessary to close a class, building, or the district. It is our hope that the mitigation efforts we have put in place will be successful to allow us to keep our doors open.

I want you to know that I recognize this last week has been stressful for families. Schedules were not available as soon as we would have liked. Bus routes were assigned at a later time than usual. Class lists, both in-person and virtual, were only available this week. Back-to-school nights did not take place. Hy-brid and virtual learning is new and the processes and details were not available as soon as many would have liked. I know this and offer my apologies. I also want to recognize that our staff–from custodial/maintenance, food service, secretaries, teachers, nurses, transportation employees, and administrators–have been working around the clock to pull everything together in order for us to open our doors next week. I cannot be more proud to be a part of this district as I see the work that has been done and continues to be done. The dedication of our staff is something we should all be proud of.

I also recognize you, our parents, who have given us grace and latitude throughout the pandemic. You have graciously understood the dynamics of this unprecedented year and were patient as we worked through the tremendous amount of details that are needed to change the way we do business in a short period of time. Because of you and our staff, we will continue to remain #MuskieStrong and will get through this school year better together. It really is going to take all of us to do our part to keep our doors open.

Please reach out to your child’s building administrator or me with any questions or concerns you may have as we move forward throughout the school year.

Sincerely,

Clint Christopher
Superintendent

Sinceramente,
Clint Christopher
Superintendente
