Petal & Leaf Floral Design: New business blooms in Muscatine

With the temperatures so recently below zero or in the single digits and ice and snow covering the ground, I love to keep cut flowers in the house as a reminder that spring is coming. As I try to bring a little ray of sunshine into my home, I look forward to checking out the beautiful arrangements Jen Summy has at her new floral shop, Petal & Leaf.

For 12 years, Summy created floral arrangements for the Flower Gallery and she loved her job. She enjoyed working with her boss, Karen, and let her know that she would work for her as long as she wanted to sell flowers. When the Flower Gallery began reimagining itself as the Gift Gallery, Summy welcomed the transition for her boss’ sake and began looking to start a business of her own. “I told her I would ride the ride with her as a florist, but that she shouldn’t stay in business for me because I could go anywhere,” Summy recalls. Within weeks of Karen sharing her plans to change the Gift Gallery’s focus, a property came on the market just perfect for a flower shop. Summy felt like Petal & Leaf was meant to be.

A fresh and modern florist, Petal & Leaf features many beautiful fresh flower arrangements for all occasions, from a small thinking of you bouquet to a larger formal arrangement. Summy also creates custom designs for all occasions and plans to expand into silk wreaths, centerpieces, and cemetery pieces as well. “I try to keep up with the trends, especially those popular with younger people,” she emphasized.

Along with arrangements, Petal & Leaf also has many house plants perfect for adding life and color to any room. Need something to pair with the plant you bought to make the perfect gift? Petal & Leaf carries a selection of Lagomarcino’s chocolate too. Crafted the old fashioned way right in the Quad Cities, it certainly provides a sweet treat for all the sweet people in your life (or yourself–you deserve some love too).

Since opening her doors three weeks ago, Summy has found she loves the creative freedom that comes with running Petal & Leaf. “I like getting to pick out my own inventory and carrying products that match my taste,” she shared. Because the region has many flower suppliers, Summy finds she can create arrangements that feature flowers with a wide range of colors, shapes, and textures. In the warmer months, she looks forward to including more locally grown plants into her designs.

If you are looking to bring the outdoors (but not the snow) inside, Summy encourages you to come pick something out from Petal & Leaf. Located at 1003 Park Avenue, you can stop in any weekday except Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and Saturdays between 9 a.m. and noon.
