MUSCATINE, Iowa–From the change jingling in your pocket to the penny you picked up off the sidewalk, coins play a part in everyday life, even if you do not think about them very much. Since 1938, the Port City Coin Club has elevated coins from a humble form of payment to treasure by exploring interesting and historical coins. Every year except in 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic prevented them from doing so, the Port City Coin Club has hosted an annual coin show. They look forward to continuing this tradition and invite the public to join them on March 20 at the Rendezvous (3127 Lucas Street in Muscatine).
The biggest Port City Coin Club event of the year, the coin show will feature more than 25 tables of coin dealers showing off their United States currency, gold and silver bullion, and supplies and books for both budding and experienced numismatists or coin collectors.
A free event, anyone interested in learning more about coins or the Port City Coin Club may come out to the show between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Attendees may win hourly door prizes, get a souvenir wooden nickel (while supplies last), and enter into a raffle for a 1912 $5 gold coin. Port City Coin Club member Nevin Roberts encourages people to pay the coin show a visit as it, “is a good chance to see what is new in the hobby or add to a collection and meet old or new friends.”
Roberts also invites anyone interested in developing their numismatic hobby to come out to the Port City Coin Club’s monthly meetings, which take place on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Musco Lighting, located at 2107 Stewart Road in Muscatine. He elaborated, “meetings are centered on learning more about what is going on in the world of numismatics and planning the annual coin show, along with a short business meeting.” For the convenience of club members, the Port City Coin Club does not hold meetings in June, July, August, or December.
Whether you have collected coins since childhood, have never tried it, or have simply enjoyed looking at all the different designs on coins you get as change at the store, the Port City Coin Club’s upcoming coin show will have something new for you. Roberts and all the members of the club gleefully anticipate sharing their hobby with the public at this remarkable gathering.
