With the nights getting cold, blustery, and just a touch spooky, and festive decorations going up all over town, kids have started getting into the Halloween spirit. Families looking for a safe and fun way to celebrate should look no further than the Muscatine Community Y (the Y). On Friday, October 25th, they will host their eighteenth annual Halloween at the Y, and this year’s event promises to turn out their most “spooktacular” one yet.

In 2001, the Y held its first ever Halloween at the Y to offer an alternative to outdoor trick or treating since many families felt uneasy after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Though times have changed, Halloween at the Y’s popularity has grown, making it one of the Y’s biggest events. Holly Brugman, Assistant Director of Family Program Services shared, “over the years, Halloween at the Y has grown and continues to be one of the most anticipated [Y] events of the year, with approximately 800 children and their families attending annually.”

Designed with the interests of children ages two through twelve in mind, Halloween at the Y features indoor trick or treating with volunteers from area businesses handing out candy as well as running more than thirty-five games and activities such as a bean bag and ring toss, cupcake walk, face painting, musical chairs, pumpkin bowling and golf, and craft stick spider crafting. New this year, Brugman revealed that Halloween at the Y will feature a Haunted Hallway as well as new giant bowling and Plink-O style disc drop games in the Kiddie Carnival area, suitable for little ones five and under. In Brugman’s own words, “It will be positively spooktacular!”

Halloween at the Y will host two separate trick or treating times, 5:00-6:30 pm and 7:00-8:30 pm. To attend, each child needs a ticket, which adults can purchase at the Y Business Desk for $2 each.

As a long time organizer of Halloween at the Y, Brugman has seen just how much children, families, and Halloween at the Y volunteers love the event and encourages you to come join them this year. “I think what I enjoy most is the look on the kid’s faces as they arrive and as they’re having fun doing all the awesome activities provided by the businesses. It makes it so worthwhile to know Halloween at the Y is enjoyed by so many kids and that so many people in our community have come together in order to make it possible for them.”

Halloween at the Y harnesses many of the community’s strengths to put on a night of wicked good fun. As the event approaches, sign your kids up and get ready for some “spooktacular” entertainment.
