Rising river prompts closures of Riverside Park, River Road

MUSCATINE, Iowa – The Mississippi River has reached moderate flood stage in Muscatine and that has prompted the Department of Public Works (DPW) to begin closing down areas of Riverside Park and River Road in accordance with the City’s Flood Plan.

The Mississippi River has been above flood stage since March 24 and is currently at 18.20 feet. The National Weather Service currently forecasts the river to crest at 19.10 feet on Saturday. Last year the river was at 21.79 feet and had been in flood stage since March 15.

DPW will be setting up barricades and restrict parking in the Riverside Park parking lot, and closing down River Road from Sherman Street to Cannon Avenue. Drivers who use that section of River Road should find alternate routes of travel. The closures will go into effect on Friday, April 10, 2020.

While the National Weather Service anticipates river levels to peak in the next week, the potential for additional heavy rain across the region going through the next month, high river levels, and wet soils could elevate the risk for higher river levels and extended periods of flooding.
