Why are you running for election?

My background, skills and experience help me to see a pathway to solving many of the problems that Iowans are facing. An understanding of the struggles that a lot of our families experience and a belief that our future economic strength is dependent on equal opportunity for everyone and that people are the basic units of society lead me to believe that we must begin to view legislation through a lens that clearly defines who benefits from the laws we pass and who pays for the services needed. Simply cutting a budget line item does not reduce the need for those services. Common sense solutions are most often found at the most local level and state legislation should build community capacity to solve problems at the most useful and cost effective level.

What are the three most important issues facing your office over the next term?

IssueWhy is this important? How will you address this issue?
Public Education fundingPublic education is the most fundamental and cost effective economic development investment any state can provide. We need to work WITH public educators and the business community to ensure that our funding strategy is sound and secure. Schools need to know what their budget will be to make good decisions. Public education funding should not be a political football, but a reasonable discussion about how to meet the needs of Iowa’s students.
Health careAccess to good and affordable health care impacts every part of life.Increased access to information that helps individuals to make good decisions about their care. Insurance standards that make sense for Iowa. Subsidized care when needed.
Economic SecurityFamilies and businesses alike do better when they know they have the financial means to succeedIncrease wages so that the employees of some businesses are not subsidizing the shareholders of other businesses who pay such low wages that full time employees are still eligible for government subsidies. Increase the economic diversity of the state.

What is the most important thing you would like voters to know about you that they may not?

I am a facts-based decision maker. I am very open to hearing from everyone. I believe that we should always ensure that our decisions hurt no one… but when that is not possible, when there are competing ethical issues, we must always choose based on causing the least harm for those who are least resilient to that harm.
