Why are you running for election?

I am seeking re-election to continue the great work the LM School Board is accomplishing. I want to continue to improve our enrichment opportunities for students, ensure that remediation efforts continue, look at a major facility improvements, and find ways to improve staff pay and benefits. Accomplishing these tasks are very daunting considering our flat enrollment numbers and that the cost of health care outpaces our additional state aid.

What is the most important issue facing your office? Why does it matter? How will you address it?

Short term, the national unrest over COVID has to be stated. I believe we are handling it very well in our district. Long term, I am very concerned with staff shortages and pay to retain staff.

What is the second most important issue facing your office? Why does it matter? How will you address it?

There is a vast amount of content to be taught in the Iowa Core but rural schools struggle finding the time or staff to cover all of it. LM has had to condense some areas of content into one due staffing or time constraints. Finding a solution for this problem is needed.

If elected, what steps would you take to improve perceptions of Muscatine in the surrounding area?

I would like others to see LM as a school of opportunity. LM allows individuals to shine in a crowd, provides students direct access to staff for help, and that you will always have a home with LM. LM provided me with the skill set needed to be successful, it was up to me to find success.

What is the most important thing you would like voters to know about you that they may not?

I take every issue with an open mind. I use facts and data to make decisions. I weigh out the risks and rewards of each decision. While not everyone will agree with my decisions, be assured, I will listen to your position with professionalism and empathy. As an alumni of Louisa-Muscatine and part of a family with a rich Louisa-Muscatine history, I will always do what I can to improve Louisa-Muscatine. My hope is that all students have an experience I had if not better. Creating a school that is rich in tradition, equipping students with the knowledge needed for opportunity, and providing a workplace that attracts and retains talent is what I want for Louisa-Muscatine. Transforming our school’s facility to reflect this is next on my list of goals.
