Seeing the Future: Matt Coss Shares Sports Observations for Year Ahead at Purple and Gold Meeting

With only days before the start of the 2019-2020 school year, fans have begun to look forward to the beginning of their sports season with relish. At the August meeting of Purple and Gold, acclaimed regional sportswriter, editor, and Muscatine native, Matt Coss, discussed his observations for many of the Muskies’ different sports teams and how he believes they will do this year.

With the football season starting next week, everyone wanted to know Coss’s predictions. In his opinion, with Tim Nimely and Eli Gaye back for another season, and the possibility of a stronger offensive line, Coss believes the team can do quite well this year. “I think Muscatine can be right there in the mix,” he stated. Coss looks forward to seeing how the team does against Johnson in week four, a game he thinks will indicate how the Muskies will play against traditionally difficult teams.

Looking ahead to winter sports, Coss thinks that wrestling in particular has a good chance to do well throughout the season. After sending so many players to the State Tournament last year, Coss thinks that the Muskies have what it takes to make it into the top ten (if not the top five) teams in the state. Coss attributes this rapid rise in success to the excellent coaching Joseph Kane has given the team. “Coach Kane did a tremendous job,” Coss enthused. “He’s getting a lot of guys doing off season stuff, and that’s what it takes.”

In basketball, Coss believes that both the boys’ and girls’ teams can rebuild after difficult seasons. Although the girls will have to play without Alicia Garcia (who will sit this season out due to an injury) Coss sees it as an opportunity for new players to excel. For the boys, he thinks the team will continue to see steady progress as their younger players get more experience. “I think Muscatine could make a climb up this year,” he added.
