Muscatine Living

I managed to crack a tooth two weeks ago. I wish I had some wild story about how I was trying to bite through the world’s hardest piece of candy or something extravagant like that, but I don’t. The experience led me to frantically call out to Clove Dental and plead with them to see me and address the cracked tooth. They were super friendly, got me in the next day, and took great care of me. I wasn’t mentally prepared for when Dr. Ben Clove told me, “you’re going to need a filling!”

The next thing I knew, I was getting a few shots of numbing, and half of my face was, well, numb. I was in and out in under 45 minutes, and honestly, looking in the mirror, I couldn’t even tell that I had a filling done. That’s how good they are at their jobs!

Why did my tooth crack? I’m chalking it up to old age. That has to be the answer, right? I brush my teeth about twice a day, every day, and try to floss just as frequently. It seems that as I have gotten older, things like this have popped up.

Case in point, last week, I brought home a CPAP machine. Yep, I have severe sleep apnea, which was confirmed after an overnight test at UnityPoint Health. I’ve known for years that I snore, and according to my wife, it has gotten worse over the years. So, I did what any good husband would do; I contacted my primary care physician, who referred me to an ear, nose, and throat specialist (shout-out to Brooke Bradley), who then set me up with the sleep study. Long story short, severe sleep apnea, and apparently, prior to when they placed the CPAP mask/machine on me during the overnight test, I moved around a lot.

As of writing this column, I will share that I am still getting adjusted to sleeping with the machine. I know I need it to sleep better to avoid any health issues that could be caused by sleep apnea.

I’d also like to say thanks to Amanda, Andrea, and the entire team at the Hy-Vee Home Medical in downtown Muscatine. Prior to picking up my CPAP stuff, I had been inside that building one time, and I think it was during a Vintage Sound 93.1 live radio broadcast circa 2016.

So, what’s my overall point in this column? Take care of yourself. As we get older, we tend to shift the focus off our own personal health to ensuring our loved ones are taken care of first. I’m guilty of this. Imagine if I had gotten a jump on this sleep stuff even two years ago; how much better would things be for me? While I don’t have regrets, I will continue doing my best to make sure I am paying attention to my body and taking the best care of it that I am able to. I’m also so thankful for the healthcare options and providers that we have here in Muscatine. Here’s to not cracking anymore teeth and to better sleep.
