Muscatine Special Olympics (MSO) fall athletes have gotten on a roll this season. On Friday, September 27th, seventy-one bowlers competed in their District Bowling Tournament at Big River Bowl in Davenport. An outstanding outing, many MSO athletes racked up high scores and will continue on to the State Bowling Tournament in Cedar Rapids next month.

At the District Bowling Tournament, bowlers competed in a variety of events, including singles, doubles, teams, and unified doubles and teams, where MSO athletes competed alongside volunteers. Regardless of the event they bowled in, the MSO’s athletes did extremely well. In total, the team earned twenty-four first place ribbons, eleven second place ribbons, nine third place ribbons, ten fourth place ribbons, fifteen fifth place ribbons, and two sixth place ribbons. Additionally, numerous athletes scored personal bests for the season while at the tournament.

Jason Miller, MSO Director, felt very impressed by the athletes’ achievements. Along with earning so many ribbons, the twenty-four first place athletes will continue on to compete at the State Tournament on November 23rd in Cedar Rapids. As Jason Miller, MSO Director put it, “I thought our athletes did really well. A lot of their scores have improved—twenty-four is a big number of athletes qualifying for State. . .. It’s fun to see the athletes get excited about their scores and to see how well they did.”

Though all the athletes who competed enjoyed working their hardest to beat their opponents, Miller shared that they had just as much fun cheering on their fellow athletes and spending time with friends both on their team and from around the region. “Our athletes love to compete and have fun. They love cheering on other people in their group and making new friends or catching up with old friends,” he elaborated.

While the MSO bowlers still have several weeks to prepare for their State Tournament appearance, MSO flag football will get back into full swing this week. After an untimely weekend of rain in September canceled their original tournament, they will work hard to prepare for the rescheduled event on November 2nd, also in Cedar Rapids.

As MSO’s fall sports teams continue full steam ahead, they will surely keep distinguishing themselves, both as skilled athletes and good sports. As both the State Bowling Tournament and the District Flag Football Tournament approach, the MSO’s many fans look forward to cheering these athletes on again and to celebrating their continuing tradition of athletic and personal success.
