Trinity Muscatine partnered with United Way of Muscatine to assemble women’s care kits to be distributed to individuals upon their arrival at Muscatine Center for Social Action’s (MCSA) Domestic Violence Shelter. Last week, United Way of Muscatine’s Community Engagement Manager was on-site at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Muscatine to provide information about the MCSA Domestic Violence Shelter and to lead Muscatine’s first kit packing event.

UnityPoint Health team members assembled and delivered 50 kits to help provide basic care needs and words of encouragement for individuals entering the local domestic violence shelter.

“As healthcare providers, we understand how disruptive violence can be for a family’s physical and mental health,” says Rachel Pohl, MSN, Executive Director UnityPoint Health – Trinity Muscatine. “Providing these basic necessities helps them start off right and sets them up for healing and moving forward without additional barriers.”

Each kit included a toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloth, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, razor, chapstick, drawstring bag, hairbrush, socks, and a personalized note card.

The MCSA Domestic Violence Shelter is one of 28 shelters left in Iowa. If their services were not available, those fleeing violent situations within our community would have to travel out of the county to receive the resources they deserve. In 2022, the MCSA Domestic Violence Shelter housed 22 women and 16 children and 346 calls were made to their crisis line. If you or someone you know needs help, the crisis line is available 24/7 at 563-263-8080.

“We are incredibly grateful to UnityPoint Health Trinity – Muscatine for their ongoing support of the Muscatine community. Their efforts through this kit packing event will help individuals entering the domestic violence shelter to have their most basic needs met, including the need to feel encouraged and supported,” says Hilary Henke Community Engagement Manager, United Way of Muscatine.
