Growing up in the Philippines watching medical shows on TV, Vanessa Wadden always thought she wanted to be a doctor. However, her experiences in college helped her realize she really wanted to go into dentistry. “When I went to college, I thought being a dentist would be a good stepping stone to becoming a medical doctor, but when I started dental school, I really liked it, so I stuck with it,” she remembers.
While still living in the Philippines, Vanessa’s aunt and grandmother in Muscatine put her in touch with Robert Wadden. The couple enjoyed Skyping and talking on Facebook, and after Robert traveled to meet her in person, the couple got married. Before coming to Muscatine though, Vanessa made sure that she could still follow her dream of becoming a dentist. “I told him I would move to Iowa, as long as I could be a dentist there, she recalled.
Though Wadden had completed her dental degree at the University of the Philippines before moving, she needed to complete some course work in the United States before she could practice here. For two years, she studied at the University of Iowa. During her time as a student, she earned numerous awards, including the American General Dentist Senior Student Dental Award and recognition from the Academy of Operative Dentists and Dentsply Sirona Prosthetics.
Now, Wadden has opened her own practice at 1616 Young Avenue in Muscatine, Healthy Smiles Family Dentistry. A, “happy coincidence,” in Wadden’s opinion, the dentists who previously owned her office decided to sell it just as she graduated and began looking for her own space. “I was happy to stay local,” she added.
With Healthy Smiles Family Dentistry officially open since July 11th, Wadden looks forward to the experience of running her own practice and helping her and her fellow dentists offer the very highest level of care possible. “I like that since I’m the one running it, I can set my own standards. I have kind of high standards, and I’m looking forward to leading my team.”
As Wadden begins her work, she looks forward to welcoming patients and putting them at ease. Even as a young dentist, Wadden would like to assure patients that she has extensive clinical experience and that she can take care of any needs or concerns they have. “I’m very confident in my work, and I treat my patients gently,” she emphasized.
