WEST LIBERTY, Iowa–The West Liberty Public Library teamed up with the Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre to create a shadow puppet workshop online via Zoom. They invite all elementary-aged kids to participate in this free three-day event.

On the dates of June 8, 10, and 12 at 2 p.m., Eulenspiegel puppeteers will help kids online as they create a brand new show about the animals outside and the crazy things they get up to with people cooped up at home. They will help kids write the story, make puppets, build stages, and, ultimately, perform their shows live for each other over Zoom. They will also record and post the show online.

More information:

  • To participate, visit the West Liberty Public Library website to sign up.
  • A three-day commitment, participants must join every day, including for the big performance at the end.
  • Kids will need scissors and markers, as well as access to Zoom (with sound and a webcam).

What to expect during the Zoom meetings:

Meeting One: June 8 at 2 p.m.

Participants will develop a series of short scenes, all based on what animals and nature do while we humans stay indoors. The puppeteers will start with an outline, and the kids will fill in the details. After the first meeting, Eulenspiegel Puppeteers Stephanie and Monica will develop the ideas into a script with as many scenes as family groups participating and email the script to the participants.

Meeting Two: June 10 at 2 p.m.

Kids will make puppets and stages. Puppeteers will demonstrate to the kids as they work right alongside them. The puppeteers will prepare packets of supplies that families can pick up at the library. Each family group will receive one scene, so participants and puppeteers will spend some time exploring how to perform it. After the second meeting, kids can practice their scenes.

Meeting Three: June 12 at 2 p.m.

For the final meeting, each kid or family group will perform their scene for everyone else. Organizers will record these, send each family a copy, and post the show to the library’s social media as well as Eulenspiegel’s Facebook page.
