MUSCATINE, Iowa–Since 1977, the Muscatine Community Y has honored one graduating Muscatine High School girls sports player demonstrating strong skills and character on and off the field with the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year Award. This year, although the Y did not hold their annual Senior Female Athlete Banquet, they still proudly named Rylee Blake the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year.

A life-long athlete, Blake first began playing softball at age five. She continued to play all the way through high school and hopes to play this summer, if sports may safely resume. For the last five years, along with playing on her school’s softball team, she played for one of Texas Glory’s Illinois fast pitch softball teams as well. In High school, Blake tried out additional sports, playing basketball for three years and running cross country and track for four.

For Blake, getting to work with others as part of a team has always appealed to her. “I enjoy the team aspect the most, although they are different in all sports,” she explained. “I have made a lot of friendships through out.” Blake also appreciates the opportunity to develop her skills to a high level and values having qualified for the 3000 meter run at the state track meet her junior year of high school and getting to play softball and run cross country when she attends Millikin University next year.

Blake felt excited to become this year’s Outstanding Female Athlete. ” It’s such a privilege to join the list of past winners of this award,” she said.

Those who have worked with Blake feel she has earned that privilege. “Rylee is very deserving of this award–she is one of the hardest workers and has great character,” said Haley Jarrett, the 2019 Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year.
