MUSCATINE, Iowa – Traffic restrictions will be in effect starting Wednesday, Sept. 30, for the East 2nd Street and Mulberry Avenue roundabout. The restrictions will be in place as modifications are made to the medians in two of the four legs of the roundabout.

The modifications will correct an oversight and allow truck access to a local business. The cost of the modifications will be covered through the Roundabout Construction Project contract using project bid item rates.

Heuer Construction, Inc., was the prime contractor for the Roundabout Project and will complete the modifications that include removing a portion of the medians on the west and north legs of the roundabout and replacing them with pavement.

The west leg (East 2nd Street west of the inner circle) will be closed to traffic starting Wednesday, Sept. 30, as Heuer Construction, Inc., begins the modification by removing the west half of the median and replacing it with street level pavement. Both lanes will be closed to traffic through Monday, Oct. 5, weather permitting.

The north leg (Mulberry Avenue north of the inner circle) will be closed to traffic once the west leg is reopened to traffic on Monday, Oct. 5. The north half of the median will be removed and replaced with street level pavement.  Both lanes will be closed to traffic through Friday, Oct. 9, weather permitting.

The $2.1 million Roundabout Project was one of the final pieces of the Mississippi Drive Corridor Reconstruction Project that began in 2017 with the reconstruction of Mississippi Drive from Broadway to Mulberry Avenue. The final piece of that project will be the removal of the power poles along Mississippi Drive by Muscatine Power and Water, which is tentatively scheduled for later this year.

Construction on the roundabout began in January 2020 and was completed on July 24, 2020.

The work is expected to close each of the two legs of the roundabout for five days starting with the west leg on 2nd Street and finishing with the north leg on Mulberry Avenue.
