Baking like it’s 1999: Cake Auction seeking retro cakes

MUSCATINE, Iowa–As the Muskie Booster Club’s Cake Auction returns for its second live event since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers decided to give a nod to the event’s long and successful past with a decades theme. As in years past, members of student council came up with five different possible themes for members of the Booster Club to vote on. As the Cake Auction approaches Jan. 27, the Boosters invite any businesses or area bakers wanting to contribute to this sweet fundraiser to sign up to donate a cake.

Since returning in 2021, the Muskie Booster Club has striven to grow the Cake Auction, eventually making it even bigger and better than in pre-pandemic years. With that goal in mind, the Boosters hope to auction off more than 100 cakes this year. “We aspire to grow year over year!” Jennifer Wade of the Muskie Booster Club emphasized.

From the auctioning of those cakes, the Boosters wants to top the $40,000 they brought in last year and to raise at least $50,000. All of the money raised will go to support the clubs and teams at Muscatine High School, helping students have the uniforms, equipment, and experiences they need to explore their passions outside the classroom.

For those who would like to contribute a cake to this year’s Cake Auction, the Muskie Booster Club has made it easy to do so. People or organizations wanting to pledge a cake may do so by filling out the Booster’s online registration form or by emailing the Booster Club.

After signing up, bakers will have plenty of time to put their decades themed masterpieces together. On the Friday of the Cake Auction, Jan. 27, they will need to drop off their cake between noon and 4 p.m. at Muscatine High School, located at 2705 Cedar Street in Muscatine. People should bring their cakes to the entrance of the Commons so that a volunteer from the Booster Club can check their cakes in.

With so many clever and nostalgic ideas, from the 50s all the way through the 2000s, from fashion to culture, classic cars to sports icons, and even local events and year book covers, Wade hopes to see many unique entries this year. “So much creativity can be surfaced with this theme, and we hope the community plugs in and has some fun with it!” she said. “This is a community activity, and we can only hope that with the growth in participation within our activities, the growth of activity within our community, will show their support!”
