MUSCATINE, Iowa–For over 70 years, golfers in Muscatine have eagerly looked forward to the City of Muscatine Golf Championship. This year, the annual outing will take place July 9 and 10 at Muscatine Municipal Golf Course, located at 1820 Highway 38 in Muscatine and will feature more prizes than ever before as well as new ways for spectators to take in the action remotely.
A competitive tournament, golfers spend the first day playing with a team of their choice. Players may enter into the women’s, men’s, senior men’s, and super senior’s men’s divisions. Based on their scores the first day, organizers will place players into flights, ensuring that entrants at all levels experience an appropriate level of challenge as they work towards winning the championship.
This year, organizers have worked hard to breathe additional excitement into the tournament, partnering with a large group of sponsors, including the presenting sponsor, Bogey Motors, to have even more great prizes than ever before. Each hole will feature prizes worth at least $50 each day, and holes three, eight, 13, 15, and 17 will feature hole in one prizes, including a year’s worth of Omaha Steaks, a used car from Bogey Motors, $500 Visa gift cards, and a set of Callaway irons. Winners of the par three shoot out can also win a car, and the overall tournament winner will get their name on a trophy featuring all the past winners to 1975, when the tournament moved from Park Lane to Muscatine Municipal Golf Course and record keeping began, as well as a sizable gift card and plaque.
Because the City of Muscatine Golf Championship features play by some of the area’s best golfers, lovers of the sport will naturally want to view the event. For those who cannot attend in person, the Discover Muscatine Sports Network will broadcast the tournament for everyone to watch. Viewers may tune in online via YouTube or Facebook, on Muscatine Power and Water Cable on Channel Three, or using the Amazon Fire Apple TV, or Roku app.
If you would like to enter into the City of Muscatine Golf Championship, you may call the Muscatine Community Golf Course clubhouse at 563-263-4735. All entries cost $30, plus green and cart fees. As a longtime golfer, organizing committee member Patrick McFate believes that players who have never visited the Muscatine Municipal Golf Course or have not for some time will truly enjoy the experience. “The Muscatine Municipal Golf Curse is one of the finest public golf courses around,” he enthused.
One of the most anticipated golfing events of the year, McFate hopes to increase participation in this year’s tournament from 130 golfers to at least 150. With opportunities to play with friends, meet new players, see some outstanding golf, and win desirable prizes, he believes the event has a lot to offer. “It’s a fun tournament, and on the second day, you get to play with people you’ve never played with before,” he said. “We have lots and lots of very good golfers, and it’s always exciting to see who wins.”
