DURANT, Iowa–When social distancing guidelines prevented Durant High School from having a traditional graduation they looked for an alternate way to celebrate. Despite the difficulties of graduating during the COVID-19 pandemic, Durant High School still found a way to recognize their seniors.
On May 17, the school honored its graduating seniors with a parade. At 1 p.m. that Sunday afternoon, the parade left the high school and traveled up sixth street, past the local park, and then back to the school via seventh street, the route typically used for the Firemen’s Festival. Durant’s 40 graduates drove along the route in cars with their families, rode in the back of pickup trucks waiving, and even traveled in tractors and other large farm vehicles to celebrate the special occasion. To help friends and families who could not attend to share in the day’s fun, Durant High School live streamed the event to their Facebook page.
