MUSCATINE, Iowa–For pet owners resolved to make 2022 a better year for their dogs, registering to use the dog park may just make their job a little easier. From giving their furry friends more exercise to letting them socialize with other dogs and make new friends, trips to the dog park may just make their year.
Opened just over three years ago in late fall of 2018, the Muscatine Dog Park occupies several acres of land between Kent Stein Park and the Muscatine Transfer Station on Houser Street. Divided into areas for large dogs, small dogs, and timid dogs, the dog park provides a good space for dogs to play off leash and safely socialize with other canines. Several shade structures as well as complimentary pet waste bags also make the dog park more appealing for dog owners too.
To help keep the dog park safe for all users, the city requires anyone using it to register their dog annually. Dog owners must provide proof of vaccination and of city registration in order to sign their dog up to use the dog park. This helps prevent dogs spreading diseases to each other while playing and also makes owner contact information more easily available should an incident occur.
Owners must also pay a fee of $15 for the entire year before the city gives them a tag to add to their dog’s collar indicating they have a dog park pass. Parks and Recreation Director Rich Klimes shared that Muscatine charges a much lower fee to use the dog park than many regional communities do and that the money goes to purchasing dog tags and pet waste bags and to having city staff maintain the park with regular mowing, trash removal, and other similar tasks. People may complete their dog park registration online and have the pass tag sent to them, or they may come and purchase it in person at the parks and recreation office in city hall, located at 215 Sycamore Street, Muscatine. Passes purchased this year will remain valid through Dec. 31.
Since the dog park first opened, it has grown in popularity. Klimes reports that the city sold 275 passes last year. Since the city has finished all major work on the park and it has had time to get established, Klimes thinks even more people will want to use it in the year ahead. “The facility is grown in and we’re still making little tweaks to make it better,” explained Klimes.
When warmer weather returns, people and pets alike will jump at the chance to get outside. A pass for the dog park offers a great opportunity for people and their dogs to enjoy some fresh air and for dogs to run uninterrupted without the fear of them getting loose. Though the current snow and cold may not lend itself to outside activates, spring always comes faster than expected. Purchasing a pass to the dog park now will allow dogs to play there as much as they can in the year ahead.
