There is a really wonderful non-profit based in LeClaire that is doing good work for our troops. Getting Heroes Home does exactly what its name says; they work to raise funds that are then used for emergency travel (for funerals, family emergencies, or other immediate situations), holiday travel (sending servicemen or women home to be with family on holidays), and life event travel (childbirth, graduations, and more) for members of the military. I cannot even imagine the amount of stress on our servicemen and women who are already serving our country and then find themselves in situations that require traveling back home as soon as possible. You can learn more about the organization by going to www.GettingHeroesHome.org.
Here in Muscatine, we have a fantastic opportunity to support Getting Heroes Home via the Shops with Hops event coming up on Saturday, Aug. 28. Shops with Hops is an opportunity to explore shops and sample beer from Iowa’s best breweries without standing in line the whole time. This is a limited capacity event to give attendees the opportunity to engage with the brewers and learn more about their delicious craft beer. Featuring 11 local and regional breweries set up inside businesses located in downtown Muscatine. The day ends with an after-party held inside Contrary Brewing that will feature raffles, prizes, live music, and proceeds going directly to Getting Heroes Home.
My friend, Bobby Ray Bunch, and his wife, Jaquelyn, are the brains behind Shops with Hops, and I’m so thankful that they decided to bring this event to the Pearl City. Bobby works as a realtor in the Quad City area and performs live music all over Eastern Iowa, including frequent performances in Muscatine. As a matter of fact, I think I was at one of Bobby’s first live shows back in the day–that’s how long I’ve known him (10 years or so).
Tickets are $25 and available online at www.ShopsWithHops.com, which includes a sampling glass along with a map of places to visit during Shops with Hops. My wife, Kasey, and I will be attending the event on Aug. 28 and have offered to provide any other additional support to ensure we can raise the most amount of funds for the cause.
In addition to Shop with Hops, another first-time event heading to Muscatine will the Food Truck Fight taking place on Saturday, Sept. 18 along the riverfront. Go to www.FoodTruckFight.com for more details.
So, finish reading this column and make plans to join in the fun while supporting great causes at the same time! Thank you to all servicemen and women who are away from their families keeping us safe and allowing us to be free. I appreciate your efforts and hope you are all able to come home soon!
