MUSCATINE, Iowa–For many, finding the motivation to create a new year’s resolution comes easily, but finding the motivation to stick with it proves difficult. To help Muscatine County residents ease into their new year’s resolutions to get more active, the Muscatine Community Y will offer a 90 Miles in 90 Days Challenge through April 2. Marketing and Development Director Nicole McCleary explained, “we wanted to give our Y members and guests a fun way to stay motivated in the new year,” adding, “good intentions don’t usually last the entire year, so if we can help people develop healthy habits and remind them fitness can be fun, then we are all likely to live a bit healthier in the long-term!”

To participate, both Y members and non-members may sign up by visiting the Y at 1823 Logan Street in Muscatine or visiting their website and paying the $10 registration fee, which guarantees all participants a t-shirt at the end of the program. Participants may pick their shirts up from the Y once they arrive.

From there, participants can accumulate miles through traditional activities like walking or running, or through creative avenues, such as playing a sport, taking a group exercise class, swimming, or lifting weights, to name a few. To help people calculate their millage, the Y has a conversion chart they can use in the logbook where participants will record their miles. The Y welcomes people to start the challenge as soon as they can and to record mileage for previous days in the book as well.

While finding the willpower to stick to a goal can prove tough, especially in the cold, dark days of mid to late winter, McCleary believes that the 90 Miles in 90 days Challenge can give people the encouragement and accountability they need both to stick with the goals they set and to develop good exercise habits. “I think it’s important we create goals for ourselves and remember that living healthier happens one step, and one mile, at a time,” said McCleary.

If people need help finding fitness activities that suit their interests, abilities, and schedules, McCleary encourages them to check out the large selection of classes and facilities the Y has to offer. “We offer a huge variety of classes and activities and we have something everyone can enjoy,” McCleary emphasized: “Whether it’s playing pickleball, walking with a friend, shooting hoops, swimming, or cycling, we know you’re much more likely to continue activities that you enjoy. That’s why our Y is so diverse — we want to help you live healthier and make fitness fun!” Anyone who does not have a Y membership may still take group fitness classes by purchasing a punch card and may use the fitness equipment at the Y by purchasing a day pass.

As winter moves towards spring, the Y hopes the 90 Miles in 90 Days Challenge will help participants move towards staying active in every season. They also look forward to providing more fun fitness opportunities all year long.
