Living History: Marilyn Ruckles

MUSCATINE, Iowa–A Muscatine native, Marilyn Ruckles grew up in a large family of seven brothers and five sisters. She attended Jefferson Elementary School and Central Middle School before eventually completing her education and graduating from Muscatine High School.

On May 16, 1953, Marilyn Ruckles married her husband Duane Ruckles. The couple married at their preacher, Reverend Everland’s, house. Marilyn and Duane Ruckles had three children together, a son named Tom and two daughters named Beverly and Patti. Ruckles now delights in her four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Like both of her parents before her, Ruckles worked for the H. J. Heinz Company in Muscatine. A dedicated employee, Ruckles worked for Heinz for 30 and a half years before retiring. Ruckles liked her work and enjoyed the company of all her coworkers and took pleasure in seeing them each day.

Ruckles always enjoyed Muscatine’s strong sense of community and how close she lived to her extended family. Ruckles has many pleasant memories of spending time with her family at different gatherings over the years. She also enjoyed attending Muscatine’s annual Fourth of July parade each summer.

Ruckles also enjoyed all of the amenities the community had available. During the heyday of the Muscatine Mall, Ruckles liked to go shopping both at Younkers and Von Maur and the many other stores it featured.

In more recent years, Ruckles moved to Bickford Senior Living in Muscatine. Ruckles appreciates its homey environment and the community that it provides for older adults. Located right in the city where she grew up, Ruckles likes living close to where she and her family made so many memories and where some of her relatives continue to live. Ruckles has always enjoyed calling Muscatine home and looks forward to many more years of living here at Bickford.
