MUSCATINE, Iowa–To honor the memory of her young nephew, Louden Lofgren, Olivia Foglesong wanted to raise awareness about the importance of donating blood to local blood centers, such as ImpactLife in Muscatine, and to encourage people to donate if they can. She explained: “My nephew Louden passed away in April. He lost a large amount of blood and needed multiple blood transfusions. During that time, it became apparent to our family that there is a major blood shortage in our community.”
To meet both these goals, Foglesong helped organize a pair of events. Beginning Aug. 16, people may donate blood at ImpactLife to benefit regional hospitals through the Louden Lofgren Memorial Blood Drive. The drive will end Sept. 18, culminating with the Love Like Louden 5K and Kids 100 Yard Dash Fun Run.
If you would like to donate blood to the Louden Lofgren Memorial Blood Drive, you may do so by making an appointment at ImpactLife, located at 2604 Second Avenue, Muscatine (next to Hy-Vee) at a time convenient to you. In order to make sure your donation gets logged as part of the drive, simply use code 4105 when signing up. Prospective donors can sign up either by using ImpactLife’s website or by contacting Chris Ciasto via phone at (563)-349-1608 or email at [email protected].
Currently, Foglesong does not have a goal for the number of donors participating in the event. She simply hopes to increase awareness about the importance of blood donation and to get as many local people to participate as she can. “At this time, our overall goal is to make awareness of the need for blood donation–we don’t have a set goal, but hope as many people as possible come out for the cause,” she emphasized.
Those who cannot donate blood for any reason may also support the Louden Lofgren Memorial Blood Drive in other ways. Foglesong encourages these people to share information about the drive on social media and to urge friends who can donate blood to do so.
She also encourages people looking for other ways to support this cause to either participate in or volunteer at the Love Like Louden 5K and Kids 100 Yard Dash Fun Run. Set to take place in Riverside Park, this event will give people a chance to raise money for ImpactLife, enjoy one of Louden’s favorite activities–running, and offer fun prize giveaways for blood donors.
