MUSCATINE, Iowa–A lover of fashion, Uncommon Style owner Darcee Norris had a goal of starting her own clothing shop. “My mom, Haydee Avalos, knew it was always a dream of mine to do something along the lines of a clothing boutique, whether it be online or in store,” shared Norris. Wanting to bring a new apparel shopping experience to the Muscatine community, Avalos and Norris, with the assistance of Alana Lange, opened Uncommon Style at 129 East Second Street, Muscatine.
Uncommon Style specializes in women’s clothing for everyone from girls in their teens to women over 50. To give shoppers a unique opportunity to find beautiful, well-priced clothing unlike anything else available in town, Norris personally decides exactly what to stock herself based on what she has learned from working with real women in the area. “I hand select every piece with our customers and the city of Muscatine in mind,” she explained with pride.
For an independent boutique, Uncommon Style has a delightfully large selection of clothing for shoppers to browse. Whether you would like to update your wardrobe with new shirts, sweaters, dresses, pants, or jeans, Norris will have something perfectly suited for you to dress up or down for most any occasion.
As a Muscatine native with deep roots in the area, Norris advocates for shopping local whenever she can. “When shopping at Uncommon Style you are supporting my dreams and my family as opposed to a big corporation,” she emphasized.
Wanting to help get the word out about her business and promote shopping small in Muscatine, Norris felt it only made sense for Uncommon Style to join the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “We want to be a part of the community and encourage Muscatine to shop local,” Norris outlined. “I think the chamber can help with this as they feel the same way.”
Though spring may still feel a long way off with snow on the ground and chilly temperatures continuing, warmer weather will arrive before you know it. To celebrate, Uncommon Style has already begun to get in its first spring styles of the year. Norris encourages you to sneak a pek at them by visiting Uncommon Style’s Facebook page or by visiting in person Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m., Fridays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
For Norris, getting to have her own clothing shop in Muscatine has proved a wonderful experience. “It’s a smaller community and my family grew up here,” she reflected.
Looking to the future, Norris hopes to continue developing Uncommon Style into Muscatine’s premier women’s clothing boutique and believes that can help keep Muscatine’s downtown active and thriving too. “We want to help Muscatine grow,” she enthused.
