Many Jewels in Muscatine’s Crown!

As the crispness of fall is in the air, I am again enjoying my favorite season of the year. Even though the Thanksgiving holiday may be celebrated a little differently this year because of the pandemic, we can still reflect on our abundant blessings. I’m particularly thankful for the numerous positive changes I’ve seen in Muscatine the last several years.

Our downtown area has undergone remarkable improvements. One of our crown jewels is the Merrill Hotel that is getting rave reviews nationwide. The new library, the scenic walking/bike path, upgraded playgrounds, new landscaping and pavement on Second Street, the new Kum & Go that replaced an eyesore lot, and a first class National Pearl Button Museum are just a few examples that have helped renew our downtown and riverfront areas. In addition, there has been a substantial investment in desirable downtown housing, along with several delightful eating establishments offering a variety of cuisine.

The newly expanded bike trails, Mississippi Drive corridor, Deep Lakes Park, the dog park, and the world class soccer complex, now with greatly expanded parking, are additional sparkling jewels in Muscatine’s crown.

More gems include the Palms Theatre, the community “Y”, renovated Muscatine High School, brand new Jefferson school, MCC dormitories, and the aquatic center at Weed Park. Recently, I rode my bike through Discovery Park and was impressed with the fresh new mulch around the trees, well-trimmed grass, and an abundance of park benches. I smiled as I observed young families enjoying fishing in the pond.

When we moved to town in 1978, the choice of housing in our price range was extremely limited. It’s amazing the number of housing developments that have been built the last few decades. In addition, there are significantly more housing options for senior citizens.

Even though they have been around for quite some time, it’s important to mention such gems as the Stanley Art Gallery, the Laura Musser Museum and our dedicated symphony orchestra. Such high caliber cultural offerings are unusual for a town our size. Our broad base of industry that is committed to the betterment of Muscatine is truly remarkable and deeply appreciated.

Yes, there are a lot more jewels in Muscatine’s crown that have not been mentioned. During this season of Thanksgiving let’s reflect on the outstanding progress Muscatine has made the last several years. There is a lot that is right with our town!

What improvements in Muscatine are you thankful for?
