MUSCATINE, Iowa – October is fire prevention month and this year’s theme is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” To help the community “learn the sounds of fire safety”, the Muscatine Fire Department will be co-sponsoring the 2021 Public Safety Open House from 12-3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021.

The annual event will be held in conjunction with the Muscatine Police Department, Muscatine Sheriff’s Department and Muscatine County Joint Communications (MUSCOM). The 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.

The month’s theme was set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

102019 Public Safety Open House - Games 001 (3) (JPG)Community members interested in learning more about the various Public Safety agencies in Muscatine are urged to come to the Public Safety Building, 312 East 5th Street, for the open house.  Those attending will gain first-hand knowledge and experience in the various services that Muscatine Fire Department, Muscatine Police Department, Muscatine Sheriff’s Department, and MUCSOM provide.

Inside the Central Fire Station participants will be able look at fire and emergency apparatus, and meet members of the fire department. There will be a smoke house in the alley behind the fire station that teaches children how to safely exit a house in a smoke filled atmosphere. There will also be live cooking fire demonstration, rope rescue demonstration, miniature physical agility station, hands only CPR skill station, as well as many other displays and activities.

Question related to the Open House can be answered by calling the Central Fire Station at    (563) 263-9233.

Static displays, games, and demonstrations will be offered inside and outside of the Public Safety Building.

The Muscatine Police Department is planning a variety of static displays of a squad car, armored vehicle, and tactical equipment. Children will not want to miss an opportunity to meet Muscatine’s K-9 officer and learn about the work he does. Muscatine Police also plan to have a Taser demonstration every 30 minutes, and an intermittent demonstration of the Muscatine Police robot. There will also be games where children can earn prizes.

MUSCOM will open up the dispatch area for limited viewing while also serving popcorn and setting up a couple of games outside where children can win 911 prizes.

The Muscatine County Sheriff’s Department will also have their K-9 officer on hand as well as static displays of squad cars, boats, and other related items in the alley parking lot.
