MUSCATINE, Iowa–Feb. 11, Muscatine High School athletes and fans from many generations came together to celebrate the accomplishments of 12 new hall of fame inductees, nine athletes and three coaches. This year, Josh Anderson, Derek Burkamper, Larie Dew, Max Dittmer, John Each, Juan Espinal, Haylie Franklin, Marcus Holler, Liz Lawhorn, Brian Lemkau, Jeff Tank, and Randy Ward took their places in the hall of fame: “We are excited to have the opportunity to induct this year’s hall of fame class. They represent a great variety of activities Muscatine has to offer,” said Muscatine High School Activities and Athletic Director Mike Henson.

Josh Anderson

A 2012 graduate and valedictorian, Anderson competed in golf, bowling, and baseball and earned a letter in each all four years. After graduating, Anderson bowled for Saint Ambrose University and earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing with a minor in management. After college, Anderson went to work at HNI and continues to bowl in local leagues.

Derek Burkamper

A celebrated baseball player, 2013 graduate Burkamper turned down a 20th round Major League Baseball draft pick to the Boston Red Socks to play baseball for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. He continued to distinguish himself pitching at the collegiate level.

Larie Dew

Before graduating in 2003, Dew competed in volleyball, basketball, and track and field. She especially excelled in basketball, earning MAC League Player of the Year and the Muscatine Community Y’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year. Dew continued to play basketball first at Kirkwood Community College and then at Manhattan College, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry. Dew now lives in Florida, New York with her husband and two sons and substitute teaches and volunteers.

Max Dittmer

Dittmer swam for Muscatine High School for four year, competing in four state meets and earning seven state medals before graduating as valedictorian in 2007. Dittmer swam for the Iowa Hawkeyes in college and swam professionally at the Conoco Phillips National Championships, 2012 Olympic trials, and the U.S. Open, where he placed eighth. Dittmer has started three businesses, Core Office Interiors, Kollective, and Rare Air and now lives in Austin, Texas with his family.

John Each

After graduating from Rock Island High School and Augustana College and coaching at Assumption and Rock Island High Schools, Each had a 30 year coaching career at Muscatine High School. During that time, he spent 14 years as the head varsity football coach, leading the team to their first playoff win ever in 2001 and first semi-finals in 2003. He also spent time doing additional coaching for varsity, sophomore, and freshman football, coaching track, leading the physical education department, and running Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Juan Espinal

Espinal played soccer for all four years of high school before graduating in 2012. He continued to show great prowess on the field at both Iowa Central Community College, where he earned an associate of arts degree, and Texas A&M International University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a minor in business. Espinal played semiprofessional soccer for the Springfield Demize and Quad City Eagles. He earned a master’s degree in health and human performance from Iowa Lakes Community College. He now serves as an assistant soccer coach at Drury University.

Haylie Franklin

Franklin competed in volleyball, basketball, track and field, and softball while at Muscatine High School. The Y’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 2010, Franklin accumulated 1,000 kills, 800 digs, and 200 blocks in her volleyball career. Franklin played volleyball while studying at Drake and Upper Iowa University, where she graduated with degrees in exercise science and psychology. She also earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Upper Iowa. She now teaches and coaches at Prairie Point Middle School in Cedar Rapids.

Marcus Holler

A football, basketball, and track athlete, Holler earned numerous football awards before he graduated in 1990. He continued playing football at Western Illinois University, where he also earned a bachelor’s degree in special education. He also earned a master’s degree, also in special education. Holler teaches for Muscatine Community School District. He previously served as high school football coach from 1999-2021 and defensive coordinator form 2001-2004. He now coaches junior high school football, basketball, and track.

Liz Lawhorn

Prior to graduating as a valedictorian in 2000, Lawhorn played volleyball and softball, having the distinction of playing on the team that won the 3A state championship in 2000. Lawhorn played one year of college softball at the University of Nebraska-Kearney and three years at the University of Nebraska, where her team won the NCAA championship in 2004. Lawhorn graduated from Loyola University Chicago’s law school and now practices law in Fort Collins, Colorado, where she lives with her husband and two sons.

Brian Lemkau

A member of the class of 2002, Lemkau golfed for all four years of high school and played on the 4A state champion team of 2001. Lemkau attended Saint Ambrose University and played golf for them, playing on a team that competed in the national championships twice. After college, Lemkau has continued playing amateur golf. He works as a senior sales engineer for Videojet and lives with his wife and three children.

Jeff Tank

A celebrated special education teacher and basketball coach, Tank coached girls basketball for 28 years, 19 as head coach. During those years, the team won 228 games, played in five state tournaments, and placed as state runners up in 2003. Tank also served as a high school and college basketball referee and softball umpire. After retiring from teaching, Tank ran his family farm in Durant until his death.

Randy Ward

After teaching and coaching in Van Buren, Keokuk, and Washington Community School Districts, Ward came to teach and coach at Muscatine High School. Best known for coaching the varsity girls basketball team during their undefeated state championship victory in 1989, Ward also coached freshman girls basketball and freshman boys basketball. After his time in Muscatine, Ward served as principal of Highland High School in Ault, Colorado. Now retired, he lives in Park Falls, Wisconsin.
