The Muscatine Mobile Food Pantry will return on Tuesday, October 7, with important updates designed to make the process safer, faster, and less stressful for both families and volunteers.
In September, the pantry served more than 500 households in Muscatine. With a similar number expected this month, organizers have worked to address a recurring challenge: traffic backing up on Mulberry Avenue as cars waited to enter the church parking lot.
“We want to eliminate the safety risks on Mulberry while also taking the stress out of the pantry for everyone involved,” Chris Brase explained.
New Reservation and Pickup Options
Beginning this Friday, September 26th, guests can reserve a box online and select a 30-minute pickup time between 1:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Organizers say the change will help spread out traffic, reduce waiting, and give families peace of mind knowing their box is guaranteed.
The new evening time slots also open the door for working parents and families with daytime jobs who may not have been able to attend before. “This system makes it easier for single moms, shift workers, and anyone juggling a busy schedule to get the help they need,” Brase noted.
Guests who pre-register will have access to a separate check-in line to keep things moving smoothly. Instructions for this process will be included in their reservation email.
Partnership with the Palms Theatre
A new partnership with the Palms Theatre will also help ease congestion. Guests will first go to the Palms to register, and then volunteers will direct them to the church parking lot for pickup as space becomes available.
This coordinated approach means cars move in smaller groups, preventing backups on Mulberry Avenue.
Fast, Efficient Drive-Thru Pickup
Once inside the church lot, the pantry’s team has developed a four-at-a-time drive-thru system modeled after the best fast-food practices. Volunteers can load four cars simultaneously, completing each in about two minutes. On average, that means a car is fully loaded every 30 seconds.
“It’s amazing to see how smoothly this process runs,” organizer Marci Hallett said. “Families get their food quickly, and nobody is stuck waiting in line for long.”
First-Come, First-Served Still Available
For those unable to register online, boxes will still be available on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 1:30 p.m. Anyone who does not receive a box right away will have the option to join a waiting list for unclaimed boxes. If a box becomes available, the pantry will notify guests by text or email to be picked up the next day.
Volunteers Make It Happen
As always, the Mobile Food Pantry depends on volunteers to direct traffic, greet guests, and load vehicles. With the new system in place, organizers hope volunteers will be able to work at a steady pace without the pressure of long lines.
“We served 512 households last month because this community comes together,” Hallett shared. “These changes will let us keep serving with care while keeping everyone safe.”
