MUSCATINE, Iowa—Since its formation in 2016, the Muscatine Diabetes Project has touched the lives of 2,700 young people through a variety of programs. By providing awareness about healthy habits that can help children avoid developing type two diabetes, education to teachers and school staff members about diabetes care, and support for children with diabetes, the organization hopes to reduce the prevalence of type two diabetes in Muscatine County and to help young people with either type of diabetes live fuller and healthier lives. To help keep these programs available, the Muscatine Diabetes Project will host their first Driving for “Awareness” Charity Golf Scramble Aug. 11.
A day of golfing fun, participants may come out and golf a full 18 holes, either individually or as a group of four, at Muscatine Municipal Golf Course, located at 1820 Highway 30 in Muscatine. Additionally, participants will get to enjoy a complimentary lunch and drink ticket and a tee gift. Throughout the day, participants can also compete in minute to win it games, gift basket raffles, and contest holes, and win hole prizes from generous hole sponsors.
Through the Charity Golf Scramble, the Muscatine Diabetes Project hopes to raise at least $4,018 to put towards their youth outreach programming. This includes continuing to provide the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! program in area schools and leading the Diabetes Busters program for third graders. More broadly, the funds will helps schools to better meet the needs of students with diabetes by offering diabetes school management trainings for school nurses, teachers, staff members, and parents as well as diabetes emergency school kits to ensure that students with diabetes always have access to the supplies they need. To support kids living with diabetes, part of the money raised will go to provide scholarships to the Iowa Diabetes Camp, allowing children with diabetes to enjoy favorite summer activities with adults trained to help them manage their condition effectively.
If you would like to register for the Charity Golf Scramble, you may do so by printing and mailing a registration from to the Muscatine Diabetes Project at PO Box 1718 Muscatine, IA 52761 or by completing the form online. Registration costs $75 for an individual or $300 for a group of four. Golfers may also purchase a Blue Card ahead of time to get two additional raffle basket tickets, an extra drink ticket, a Muscatine Diabetes Project koozie, a contest hole mulligan, and a one hole game ticket. All interested golfers must register for the Charity Golf Scramble by July 28.
Though helping raise awareness about diabetes and helping people with any type of diabetes care for themselves represents a serious endeavor, organizers with the Muscatine Diabetes Project anticipate many people coming out and having a good time while raising much needed funds: “We would encourage anyone that enjoys golfing to participate in the Driving Fore ‘Awareness’ Charity Golf Scramble.
