MUSCATINE, Iowa–Though school has ended for the summer, Muscatine FFA members remained hard at work for several competitions, including floriculture. On June 13, Muscatine FFA’s floriculture earned the state championship and punched its ticket to compete at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October.

In floriculture, students compete in both practical and academic challenges. Individually, students complete several tests, including general knowledge, identifying plant materials, and problem-solving. They also created corsages on their own. Together, students made several arrangements, including a basket, bouquet, bud vase, and a funeral spray.

For many students, the team challenges represented the best part of the contest. “I really enjoyed arranging flowers for the team event and making the corsage,” said sophomore Chelsea Carlson, who hopes to incorporate floriculture into her future career.

“I enjoyed working with my teammates because we could bounce ideas off each other, and it made everything that much more fun,” added junior Jacob Murillo-Keener.

In addition to placing as the top team in the state, Muscatine FFA had some individual champions. Chelsea earned first place as an individual, and Jacob came in second. All this success surprised and pleased the students. “It was unexpected,” reflected Chelsea. “I felt pretty good throughout it, but I didn’t think we would win.”

Dave Tometich, one of Muscatine FFA’s advisors, credits working with local partners like Flowers on the Avenue with preparing students for competition. By getting experience in the field with professionals, students have the knowledge and confidence to shine.

In October, Muscatine FFA students will travel to Indianapolis to attend the FFA National Convention and have their Envirothon, floriculture, and nursery and landscaping teams compete. The students look forward to demonstrating their knowledge on the national stage and to the hands-on experiences students have preparing for the competition.
